Our Story

Care Organization Public Enlightenment [C.O.P.E] is a nonprofit, non governmental organization, established and registered in 1995 as a comprehensive breast cancer resource provider for women, students, breast cancer survivors and caregivers in Nigeria.

We are a member of the Union for International Cancer Control [UICC] and are committed to mitigating the breast cancer mortality rate in Nigeria through our SCREEN framework: Screening, Counseling, Referrals, Education, Enlightenment, and Nurturing.

From our research, focus groups, interviews, and surveys, the unfortunate reality is that there is hardly a home in Nigeria that has not been affected by one form of cancer or another.

Data from our screening programs, spanning over two decades, shows that roughly 1 in 12 women is expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer and many cases occur in premenopausal women. Separately, 1 out of 100 men will have breast cancer. Furthermore, along with the increased diagnosis of breast cancer, the late presentation of breast cancer and high mortality rate among women in Nigeria is distressing. Key factors responsible for delayed diagnosis and deaths include level of education, fear, culture, religion, social barriers, finance, lack of access to information and affordable quality healthcare.

It is through this nuanced outlook and understanding of the challenges millions of Nigerian women face in accessing affordable healthcare that we resolved to educate and provide monthly breast screenings at a subsidized rate. As a result, women can avail themselves of the recommended breast ultrasound scan and clinical breast examinations. However, there is a lot more to be done and it is imperative that we continue to emphasize the importance of being PROACTIVE rather than REACTIVE.
